Resulta fundamental para llegar a ser un buen odontopediatra conocer los antecedentes históricos de esta especialidad. Muchos de los procedimientos terapéuticos de la antigüedad hoy nos pueden parecer absurdos y pueden desencadenar hilaridad, pero debemos tener en cuenta que no disponían de mejores métodos ni técnicas. No resulta descabellado pensar, aunque mucho ha avanzado la ciencia, que muchos de los conocimientos que hoy damos por asentados, y muchas de las terapias que aplicamos diariamente en el campo de la Odontopediatría sin someterlas a juicio crítico, el día de mañana pueden quedar completamente desplazadas ante nuevos descubrimientos científicos.

To become a good paediatric dentist, it is important to know the previous history of this speciality. Today, many of the ancient therapeutic procedures may appear to be absurd and laughable; however, it is important to realize that they did not have access to better methods or techniques. It is not far fetched to think that although there have been many scientific advances, much of the knowledge that today we have for granted, and many of the therapies that we use on the daily basis in the field of Paediatric Dentistry without subjecting them to critical judgment, may be replaced tomorrow with new scientific discoveries.
